Amel Larrieux's "Bravebird"
JAZZ! SOUL! VOCALS! Who is Amel Larrieux?!
Much more than the lead singer of Groove Theory. More than the few lil jams you've heard in the background of your favorite black love movie. Nah, nah nah. This album is a good blend of upbeat and off putting jazz while at the same time, being super dance-able, and even a had a few songs worthy to be shouted in my car on the way to work.
My favorites are...
"All I Got" -- a self-empowering feminist's anthem.
"We Can Be New" -- a thought provoking slow jam. Usually listened to when I chose to partake of finding my breath in my backyard.
"Giving Something Up" -- your shoulders poppin'? Cause mine are.
"Your Eyes" -- ...not gonna go too deep, just know it involves candles, incense, dim light and an overactive imagination. Don't jump to conclusions.
anyways... I'm working my way through the rest of her discography slowly but surely... so look out for other posts on her. Nonetheless, Amel has served me well with songs like "Gills and Tails" (ultimate favorite) and "No One Else", and didn't fail in this project either! Def underrated in my opinion.
